Understanding Drain Blockages: Causes and Solutions

Blockages occur when foreign objects or substances obstruct the free flow of water or waste through plumbing systems. These blockages can happen in various drainage systems, including sinks, toilets, showers, and sewer lines. A drain blockage can result from a combination of factors, including human activity and natural processes. Common causes of drain blockages include the accumulation of organic materials such as hair, grease, food particles, and soap scum. These substances gradually build up over time, narrowing the passage and impeding water flow. Additionally, objects accidentally dropped down drains, such as toys, sanitary products, or excessive toilet paper, can contribute to blockages. External factors like tree root intrusion and soil movement can also lead to drain blockages. Tree roots, seeking moisture and nutrients, may infiltrate underground pipes, causing them to crack or collapse. Likewise, soil shifting due to geological activity or poor construction practices can exert pressure on drainage systems, resulting in blockages.

L B White Offers a Range of Blockage Solutions:

Stormwater Blockages: A flooded backyard is often a telltale sign of a blocked stormwater drain, unable to handle the rainwater influx. The usual culprits include leaves and miscellaneous debris. While DIY methods, like plungers or augers, can occasionally unblock a drain, these approaches may jeopardize the drain's integrity, leading to further damage. At L B White, we advise enlisting professional help to ensure effective and safe drain unblocking, mitigating any risk of additional damage.

Sewer Drain Blockages: An overflowing gully trap typically signals a sewer drain blockage, posing significant health and safety risks. Addressing these issues requires the expertise of professionals equipped with appropriate protective gear. Only licensed professionals, like the team at L B White, are legally authorized to repair and replace waste pipes, ensuring your sewer system is functioning optimally and safely.

Toilet Blockages: A blocked toilet, which can arise from a variety of factors, requires a cautious approach. Often, it's best to let professionals address the issue for your peace of mind. While plungers may sometimes prove useful, the risk of overflow can pose health and safety concerns, not to mention potential lingering odours. Trust in L B White, your reliable "Plumbers Wellington," to deal with your toilet blockages efficiently and effectively.

DLM Wallace Lead Sheet / Acrylead

Flashings Must Be a Minimum of 17KG/M2

· Lap cover between individual sheets/pieces must be a minimum of 100mm

(Refer NZBC E2/AS1- 4.5.2 (f) )

· Parallel flashings must be dressed down in to the tile pan, and have a minimum cover of 150mm, with a minimum upstand of 100mm (75mm minimum upstand behind cladding). Refer NZBC E2/AS1- Figure 26.

· Transverse flashings must have a minimum cover of 150mm over the tile, and have a minimum upstand of 100mm (75mm minimum upstand behind cladding). Refer NZBC E2/AS1- Figure 26.

· Flashings should be designed so that while the lead is in position, free thermal movement is not restricted.

· Nails, screws and fixings should have a similar life expectancy, and thus should be copper, or stainless steel.

· When forming and shaping lead, caution must be taken to not over-stretch the lead, which can create thin areas with reduced integrity.
